Jean Thornton Riding Clinic
February 06, 2010
Equival Farm, Deleon Springs Florida

Forget the cold. Forget the wind. We don't remember any of that. What we do remember is that we had a really great time and a really great clinic with Jean Thornton at her Equival Farm in DeLeon Springs, Florida.

Six horse and rider pairs along with their grooms, trainers, family, and spectators braved the elements for a chance to ride under and learn from an accomplished gold medal rider, Jean Thornton.

At the start of each session, each rider told Jean and the audience a little about themselves, their horse, and what they hoped to accomplish this day.

Then Jean started each riding pair with long and low, stretching exercises. This was one of Jean's themes of the day. The horse should be able to stretch down and through at all three basic gaits; walk, trot, and canter while still moving forward at a rythmic pace without quickening or loosing balance.

Once this was successfully demonstrated by the pair, Jean set the rider and horse through symmetrical geometric patterns in the arena in order to encourage straightness, forwardness, correct bend, and outside rein. By setting the horse up with these exercises, the horse and rider were able to correctly and easily execute figures like leg yields, correct corners, and balanced upwards and downwards transitions..

Throughout each ride, Jean highly praised the pair when a movement was executed properly while staying positive and encouraging when movements were not quite what was needed or when riders went off pattern. Jean was able to patiently describe what should be done with the seat, leg, hands, balance or thought process in order to get the rider back on track.

Lunch break was on Jean's back patio. Many thanks to all the participants who brought food to share. We had sandwiches, chips, guacamole dip, deviled eggs, chili and cornbread, and iced and mint brownies. No one went away hungry.

After lunch, Jean took us all on a walking tour of her farm. We were introduced to her baby horses and her more educated adult equines. We all enjoyed how friendly and curious the youngsters were. Jean explained about the different palomino colors and her breeding preferences for a specific golden color. Many thanks to Jean for giving us this tour. It made this clinic really unique and special to remember.
